**Kiwi are flightless birds endemic to New Zealand, in the genus Apteryx and family Apterygidae.

At around the size of a domestic chicken, kiwi are by far the smallest living ratites and lay the largest egg in relation to their body size of any species of bird in the world.[2] There are five recognised species, all of which are endangered; all species have been adversely affected by historic deforestation but currently large areas of their forest habitat are well protected in reserves and national parks. At present, the greatest threat to their survival is predation by invasive mammalian predators.

The kiwi is a national symbol of New Zealand – indeed, the association is so strong that the term Kiwi is used, all over the world, as the colloquial demonym for New Zealanders. (This information is from Wikipedia)

***From 12 to 14- November this year, Palmerston North was hosted the New Zealand National Stamp Show - Palmpex 2010, at Arena 3 Manawatu in Pascal Street. Following on from the two previous National Stamp Shows held in Palmerston North in 1982 and 1999, the event is sure to be a huge success. The stamp show was opened on Friday 12 November by the Governor-General, His Excellency Sir Anand Satyanand.

New Zealand Post, as the major sponsor, had a large presence. The New Zealand Stamp Dealers Association was also been represented with 19 trade stands of stamp dealer members from throughout New Zealand and the United Kingdom. There was been more than 500 frames of stamps, postal history and postcards in a variety of classes, including Championship, Traditional, Youth, Youth Development and Adult Development to view.

Already the Palmpex Organising Committee has produced a number of souvenirs for the show. There are still a limited number of Supporting Memberships available, and there will be a different postmark for each of the three days featuring a windmill, a helicopter and a kiwi. Also on display will be a large Stamp Kiwi at the youth court. For more details, visit the Palmpex 2010 Stamp Show website: www.stampsnz.co.nz/palmpex.
